Dr Kienzle originated WA Associates in 1993 to provide optical engineering services to the optical manufacturing industry. In 2001 this service was extended to include the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) industry. Prior to 2001 Dr Kienzle worked for Spectra Physics Lasers, Pacific Optical, Science Applications, and Aerojet Electrosystems in the capacity of Project manager and Technical specialist. His GIS experience is highlighted below.

Optics Experience

WA ASSOCIATES -

  • Wrote software to predict window transmittance over visible and RF spectral ranges for stealth products. This software eliminates the need for two software packages or auxiliary analyses to compute the performance of Stealth coatings and components.
  • Developed quartz crystal coating/monitoring process for AR coatings. This process is very amenable to automatic coating and allows more efficient use of coating technicians.
  • Performed system analyses and designed illumination approach for a periscope operated at low temperature. Implementation resulted in fast evaluation of illumination concepts and improved performance.
  • Designed high performance, broadband, and UV polarizer. This design demonstrated the ability to meet system requirements with an optical coating and consequently eliminate the need for additional components.
  • SPECTRA PHYSICS LASERS -

  • Designed and developed coatings for laser components and electro-optical crystals. These coated components were incorporated into laser systems that in several cases secured high market share because of the optical coatings.
  • Designed optical coatings with color, polarization, and phase, as well as spectral requirements. These design/development activities typically resulted in a resolution of final specifications and a production award.
  • Specified, implemented, and developed ion assisted coating processes and systems. These processes resulted in more environmentally stable and consequently more marketable products.
  • Wrote software for chamber ion/evaporant uniformity, traced rays in electro-optical materials and others. This software reduced cost by shortening implementation time for ion-assisted processes and increasing tolerances for electro-optical material fabrication.
  • Developed fabrication and metrology techniques for ring laser gyro components. This included scatter evaluation and RMS surface roughness. Both steps were required to qualify for production of these components.
  • Designed/developed coatings for telecommunications components like etalons, attenuators, circulators, and DWDM components. All SPL wavelockers and etalon products used these coatings.
  • Identified/purchased and implemented metrology to make the precise thickness measurements required to maintain etalon\wavelocker specifications.
  • PACIFIC OPTICAL -

  • Designed and developed optical coatings for visible and IR spectral region for military optical systems. These coatings were typically instrumental to the award of a production order.
  • Implemented an ion assisted coating process, installed a PACVD machine and deposition process. The PACVD machine and process resulted in a production award for "hard carbon" coatings on germanium windows.
  • Designed and developed eyesafe filter coating and metrology. They were considered the best available and the development effort resulted in two million-dollar production award.
  • Specified, purchased, and implemented 54-inch automatic box coaters, ion beam guns, cryopumps, quartz crystal monitors, and other optical coating and metrology equipment. This equipment extended production capacity or provided key capability to procure research/development orders.
  • Supervised a production coating lab with four cleaning and eight coating technicians.
  • Designed and developed a rain resistant coating for aircraft windows that was critical to a 20 million-dollar production award. This coating was used in the execution of a successful production program.
  • Manager of program to develop a FLIR optical system for a next generation fighter. This system was an 8 to 12 micron IR system that incorporated most common IR materials, aspherics, and stealth technology. The program successfully completed prototype systems for evaluation.
  • GIS Experience

  • Owns and/or has operated a large variety of GIS application software including ESRI, Manifold, IDRISI, and CAD.
  • Owns and and/or has operated GIS related hardware including large format printers, GPS, web servers, file servers, and computer networks. This has included equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Designed, developed, and implemented spatial databases with application to agriculture, planning, emergency services, and geohydrology.
  • Worked with computerized data compilations in a variety of data base management systems and converted from one to another (Excel, Access, Dataflex, Oracle, and others). Data were both incorporated into the map or linked through external databases.
  • Has worked with a large variety of GIS data formats including vector, raster, digital elevation models(DEMS), digital orthographical imagery(DOQQ), (DRG) imported multiple aerial photographs into GIS application software for analysis and spatial modeling using ESRI and IDRISI software.
